The time jump that separated the second and third seasons of Star Trek: Discovery definitely gave the show the boost that it needed in terms of storytelling freedom. With some exceptions, the third season was a definite step in the right direction for what had been a very up and down show. The misstep of the Burn reveal aside, the final episode of the season ended on a high.

The fourth season picked up several months after that ending, depicting a Starfleet that was on the way toward recovery. From the off, two things seemed to be in abundance - peril, and politics. Star Trek: Discovery has often been described as a speeding bullet, flying through its stories at a breakneck pace. However, despite some more examples of this, the fourth season has confidence that was lacking in earlier episodes.

Burnham seems already more settled into the role of captain. Tilly has been promoted to lieutenant (sorry Harry Kim), with Adira joining the cast full-time. Book suffers a catastrophic loss, while the President of the Federation is displaying her more Cardassian-like traits, expertly weaving different people to her whims.

Discovery is a very different Star Trek from what has come before, but by the fourth season, it has truly come into its own identity.
