His films are quiet meditations on existence, and on modern man struggling to find his place within the natural world. Terrence Malick has, as a result of producing films like The Thin Red Line and To The Wonder, gained a reputation as a pretentious and intensely serious filmmaker. He also likes Zoolander. Yes, the same director who occasionally likes to bring you images of grass swaying in the wind and beautiful people contemplating their own mortality is a huge fan of Ben Stiller's cult 2001 comedy about warring male models. Malick's apparently so enamoured with the film that he regularly watches it, quotes it to friends and organises film festivals with Zoolander included in the line-up. Rumour has it that Stiller even once recorded a special birthday message for Malick in character as Derek Zoolander. Weirdly, all this probably means that the director behind the dreamlike, Cannes-winning The Tree Of Life will be one of the first to queue up and see Zoolander 2 when it opens next year.
Lover of film, writer of words, pretentious beyond belief. Thinks Scorsese and Kubrick are the kings of cinema, but PT Anderson and David Fincher are the dashing young princes. Follow Brogan on twitter if you can take shameless self-promotion: @BroganMorris1
