10 Bleakest Endings In Horror Movies
1. Eden Lake
Eden Lake is a 2008 British horror movie that is surprisingly effective. The movie doesn’t rely on supernatural tropes or zombies or anything like that, instead casting as its central antagonists a group of young chavs, headed by a psychopathic thug played with terrifying realism by Jack O’Connell.
Jenny and Steve are a middle class couple looking for a romantic weekend of camping. Instead they are put through a genuine ordeal by the gang which results in the death of Steven and Jenny accidentally killing one of the younger members of the gang. She eventually makes it out of the woods and finds sanctuary in the nearby town, but her haven doesn’t remain safe for long.
It transpires that she’s wandered right into the estate where the parents of the violent youths live and they aren’t interested in hearing what their little darlings have been up to, instead deciding to make sure Jenny can’t talk to anybody about what happened.
It's a brutal ending that leaves the viewer feeling angry at the injustice of it. No matter which class you belong to, the film will leave you thinking long after it’s over with its unrelentingly bleak look on life in modern day England.
