10 Bleakest Endings In Horror Movies
2. The Mist
Let’s be honest, we all knew this movie was going to be on the list, right? When it comes to bleak endings in movies, it doesn’t come much bleaker than The Mist, which actually changed its ending from the original source material but did it so well that the author, Stephen King, has regularly sung the praises of the movie’s nihilistic final moments.
The film revolves around residents of a town who are trapped in a supermarket when a mysterious mist rolls into town. It’s thick and impossible to navigate; what’s worse is that it is filled with monsters. When things get too much, our main survivors decide to hop in a car and see how far they can drive.
They drive until they run out of fuel but they still haven’t escaped the mist. Taking stock of their situation, and deciding they’d rather die on their own terms. The main character, played by Thomas Jane, uses his four remaining bullets to kill his four companions. He then steps out of the car to allow the creatures to end his life…and at that moment the mist clears and the US Army show up to rescue everyone. It is a painful ending that feels not only bleak but particularly cruel.
