10 Blockbuster Films You Won't Believe Are Turning 20 Years Old
3. Chicago
While not troubling the profit charts too much, Chicago actually won Best Picture at Academy Awards this year and thus deserves its high ranking on the list!
Not only is it the only traditional musical on our list - we'll leave the 8 Mile argument to you - but it was the first musical to win the award since Oliver! in 1968. Not only that, Catherine Zeta-Jones won the Best Supporting Actress Award among others, while Renee Zellweger won the Golden Globe for Best Actress and Richard Gere the Golden Globe for Best Actor.
Set in 1924, just a little more than the 20 years ago we're looking back to, the film is an adaption of the 1975 stage musical, which was derived from the 1927 film of the same name. Chicago explored celebrity, scandal and corruption in the '20s jazz scene with Zellweger and Zeta-Jones performing as two murderesses who await trial and fight for the fame that will keep them from their fate.
The cast also includes Queen Latifah, Lucy Liu, John C Reilly and Taye Diggs, and the movie grossed $306 million worldwide. Of course, I did say it didn't trouble the profit charts - which is because Chicago was the highest grossing movie to never reach number one or two at box office.
Chicago was the highest grossing live action movie until the release of Mamma Mia! and turns 20 at the very turn of the year, having been released on December 27th.
But how does it hold up? Much like Gangs of New York, the historical setting means ageing is minimal, and the movie is still a triumph!
