6. Pearl Harbor

Like Titanic, Michael Bay felt completely comfortable taking a real life tragedy and transforming (forgive the pun) it into mindless entertainment for the masses - like Titanic, Pearl Harbour managed to exceed all expectations and go on to become a major box office success. Bloated budgets, reports of historical inaccuracies and the fact that the artless hack Michael Bay was helming the movie all came together to give some industry analysts enough reasons to assume a flop was on its way, and when Disney boss Peter Schneider stepped down in the wake of its initial performance after opening weekend it seemed as if they were right. Ranking in 6th place for 2001's movies wasn't as impressive as it could have been, but Pearl Harbour was far from the flop predicted - although it's highly unlikely that sales in Japan had much of an impact on global receipts...
