10 Brilliant Films That Are Easy Targets For Haters
8. Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990)
Why some people hate Gremlins 2: The New Batch will forever be a mystery. Sure, it’s entirely different from its predecessor but only in good ways. It’s weird, it’s fun, and it even lampoons the original.
Taking place in an elaborate skyscraper instead of a small town, Joe Dante’s follow-up finds the titular creatures causing insane mayhem as they take over the building.
The New York setting allows Dante to satirize yuppies and corporate culture in general, and it also keenly includes a wealth of pop-culture nods (Hulk Hogan’s cameo is near-genius), as well as plenty of meta, self-referential humor regarding the original film (film critic Leonard Maltin, who panned the original, appears briefly and is mauled by the Gremlins).
The sequel was allowed to take on this more cartoon-like quality due to Dante wanting complete and total control over the film, so naturally he inserted a lot of things that would adequately annoy studio executives. This also annoyed many fans in the process, but, nevertheless, this is a film that deserves to be championed.
