10 Brilliant Hidden Details In Oscar Winning Films
5. Inception - 'Alternate State' License Plates
Christopher Nolan isn't a director known for doing things by halves. His films are often stuffed full of tiny little details which are easily missed, even on multiple watches.
Inception (2010) is no exception, as an item which clarifies that the team are in a dream and not reality is visual during the the first level's high octane car chase/shootout. If you look closely at any of the vehicles' licence plates in the scene, you'll spot that the usual L.A. plate has been given a bit of a twist in Yusef's rainy dream-version of the city.
Instead of the typical 'The Golden State' motto you tend to see on a Californian license plate, we see 'The Alternate State'.
This is quite clearly a link to the fact that dreaming is considered an alternate state of consciousness.
In the midst of all the dream hopping and mind-bending action sequences it's easy to miss some of the more subtle details Nolan laced into this ground-breaking flick. In the end, it's little surprise arguably his greatest piece of work walked away with four Academy Awards (Cinematography, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects).
