The Question

Will the upcoming fifth Indiana Jones film really be the final entry into the series or not?

The Likely Answer

The evidence mostly points to yes, but with some caveats.

Between Harrison Ford turning 80 this year and Kathleen Kennedy referring to it as the "fifth and final" film in the series, it certainly feels like Disney is teeing this one up to bring the series to a graceful conclusion while sunsetting the Indiana Jones character in an affecting manner.

But we surely all know Hollywood too well to blindly believe that the story will truly end here, or that Lucasfilm can definitely resist setting up a younger successor to assume Indy's mantle.

There admittedly aren't many immediately obvious candidates among Indy 5's cast, beyond the possibility of Phoebe Waller-Bridge's female lead - widely assumed to be Indy's new protege - carrying the torch forward.

But despite the popularity of Waller-Bridge's hit TV show Fleabag, it hardly means she's the right fit to become the face of Indiana Jones, and so this just might be a rare case of Hollywood putting one of its most beloved IP out to pasture for good.

Of course this doesn't preclude the possibility of Indiana Jones getting an outright reboot in 20 years, but there's a decent chance this is actually it for the franchise - well, this version of it, anyway.
