10 Canadian Horror Movies You Must See Before You Die
8. Tucker And Dale Vs Evil (2010)
This great example of the difficult genre comedy-horror stars Tyler Labine and the always excellent Alan Tudyk. Despite having a title that makes it sound like it belongs with spoof horrors like Scary Movie, it does an amazing job of turning the cabin in the woods horror trope on it’s head, telling the story from the point of view of the hillbillies.
Whereas this type of film usually shows the teenagers as the helpless victims, the story portrays them as generally selfish, prejudiced and unlikable, except for the final girl Ali. The joy of this film comes from showing how the actions of Tucker and Dale appear psychotic to the teenagers, while simultaneously giving perfectly logical and sympathetic reasons why they are doing everything.
Every death is either a complete accident or comes about by the teenagers causing their own demise through stupidity and impulsivity. Somehow, they all seem to implicate the harmless duo who are simply trying to do up their new holiday home.
The film is such a clever idea, it actually makes you question how much we only view stories from one side, with our unconscious prejudices being influenced by the bias of the person telling us the story.
