Henry James' Turn of the Screw has captivated hearts and imaginations for over a century.

Sadly, most adaptations of the gothic novella haven't been great since they usually focus on the spooky elements rather than psychological aspects, the subtle scares, and the ambiguous story, with the most recent version, The Turning, probably the worst version yet.

With that said, one adaptation, simply called Haunted, looked like it could capture the spirit of the book perfectly. The project would've been directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, best known for overseeing 28 Weeks Later, with a script from by Chad and Carey W. Hayes, renowned for their work on The Conjuring Universe. More importantly, Haunted would've been produced by none other than Steven Spielberg.

With so much talent onboard, this version of The Turn of the Screw was shaping up to be the best of the lot. But mere weeks before production began, all plans were put on hold despite $5 million having already been spent on it. Due to creative differences, all the main parties involved couldn't see a way to move forward. And just like that, a potential classic vanished into thin air.
