1. Love Actually
No, no. This is more than just a chick flick. This is more than just a romantic comedy. This is, hands down, one of the greatest films ever. I always feel like my top 10 gets bigger with every movie I find myself saying, "This easily makes it into my top ten!" but seriously...this does. When I first saw Love Actually I, actually, didn't like it. It was boring and slow and overly sentimental. I was watching it with a friend of mine who just so happened to be a girl, (whom I later ended up dating and marrying for the record) and she was furious. The following year, out of mere happenstance, I watched the film at Christmas time. I actually hadn't remembered it being a Christmas flick, and this time around it stole my heart. In that year I'd grown familiar with a lot of the actors in the film. Liam Neeson, Keira Knightley, Rowan Atkinson, Martin Freeman, Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Alan Rickman, Bill Nighy, you see where I'm going here. The A-list is never ending. (And for those of you who are into The Walking Dead, which is to say most of you, Andrew Lincoln gives a heart-breakingly beautiful performance here.) Love Actually is the masterful film that inspired both of Garry Marshall's Valentine's Day and New Years Eve. Though neither of those can live up to or replicate what Love Actually has done flawlessly. As far as the interweaving character stories, it's like watching a Robert Altman film where everything goes right in the end. It encompasses so many different types of love, young love, father and son love, bro love, unrequited love, true love, foolish love, that it's impossible not to get connected on at least one level here. Even the characters who make mistakes in the film are still likable. The writing is superb, the direction top notch, the score sweepingly romantic, and each performance pitch perfect. Love Actually passes by like a whirlwind of anguish that results in cheering and happiness. It's a movie about love in its infinitely complicated and various forms. Love isn't just boy meets girl, it's a multifaceted diamond with so many different characteristics that we've all experienced the various degrees of it over time. Because of that, it's so incredibly real, touching, and beautiful that you can't help but cry tears of joy when the credits roll. Love Actually is not simply one of the best romantic comedies or best chick flicks made, it is one of the best films I have ever seen in my entire life. Alright guys! Considering there's so many out there, and the impossibility to cover them all, what're some chick flicks your ended up loving? Consider that comment section your free, anonymous place to admit the girly films you love.
