10 Christmas Horror Movies You Must See Before You Die

5. Gremlins

Before the naysayers jump in and declare it not a horror (it is, just of the comedy heavy variety), Gremlins is a classic Christmas film regardless of its genre €“ up there with the likes of It€™s a Wonderful Life and... erm... Elf €“ and considering it€™s a tad more light-hearted, it€™s a nice antidote to the gore and murderous Santas in the other films on this list. In case you€™ve been living under a rock since the film came out in the €˜80s, here€™s how it goes: young Billy is given a strange, cute creature called a Mogwai for Christmas from his dad accompanied by a strict set of rules €“ don€™t expose him, don€™t get him wet and never, ever feed him after midnight. Now Billy could€™ve observed his dad€™s rules, but then Gremlins would€™ve ended about 20 minutes in and instead he spills water on the little guy and suddenly his small, Norman Rockwell-esque town is overrun with nasty, little green beasts hell-bent on causing as much mayhem as possible Okay, it is hilarious but there are some pretty creepy moments even given its comedy - Billy€™s mum being stalked by gremlins to the tune of Johnny Mathis€™ Christmas classic Do You Hear What I Hear for example, or Billy€™s love interest Kate telling a heart-warming childhood tale of her father getting stuck in a chimney dressed as Santa and dying (Merry Christmas, everyone!). But whether you find it funny, scary or otherwise, there€™s no doubt Gremlins is a festive must-see.
