Another project that Hollywood has spent years developing, the persistence being shown in attempting a live-action remake of Akira makes it inevitable that one day the movie will eventually hit theaters. Quite frankly, it seems like a terrible idea as Katsuhiro Otomo's animated adaptation of his own manga series is one of the greatest and most influential Japanese movies in history, packed to the brim with stunning visuals and epic set-pieces. To create anything half as ambitious as the original, any Hollywood remake would surely need a budget of $500m, which just isn't going to happen. Of course, that isn't going to stop them from trying, and semi-regular updates on the status of the Akira remake have been making the rounds for the last few years. Fans of the original were incensed when news broke that the Hollywood remake would be set in Manhattan and feature a Western cast, but that hasn't stopped numerous writers and directors along with dozens of actors being linked to the live-action adaptation, yet each time the project has found itself shut down. Jaume Collet-Serra has been loosely attached since 2011, and as recently as February the director has been talking about his vision for the movie. There's a high chance that the live-action remake of Akira will be awful given the troubled development process and reported $70m budget, but given the time and effort that has been put into the project Hollywood will keep trying until someone finally gets it made.
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
