10 Clever Ways Horror Movies Foreshadow the Ending
2. Ed's Monologue - Shaun Of The Dead
Shaun of the Dead is often praised for its sharp writing, hilarious performances, and impeccable physical comedy. However, the British horror-comedy should also be commended for its masterful foreshadowing.
After Shaun gets dumped, he drowns his sorrows at the Winchester pub with his mate, Ed. To cheer Shaun up, Ed says they should go on a bender the following night. At a glance, Ed's plan sounds innocent, but if you listen carefully, he's breaking down every major plot point of the film.
Ed starts his monologue by saying they'll get "a Bloody Mary first thing", which is a nod to the female zombie they encounter in the garden the next day. He says they'll follow that up with "a bite at the King's Head," referencing Shaun's stepdad getting bitten by a zombie. Ed then mentions "a couple at The Little Princess," indicating how he and Shaun will team up with their friends to face the flesh-eating horde.
When Ed says they'll "stagger back here," it foretells how Shaun's group will pretend to be infected to blend in with the undead. And when Nick Frost's character says their pub crawl will conclude with a "bang! Back at the bar for shots!", that highlights how the gang will make their final stand at the Winchester with a shotgun.
