10 Cloverfield Lane: 9 Clues To What The Mystery Sequel Really Is

5. Early Test Screenings Suggest It Wasn't Always Linked To Cloverfield

Using test screenings as a basis for information on an upcoming movie is never great practice - they're reactions based on an unfinished version of the film made by people who may not have a full grasp on the scope of the project - but in the case of a movie that has had so much change like 10 Cloverfield Lane, they're an essential piece to cracking the puzzle. OK, so The Movie Formerly Known As Valencia had its test screenings in late 2015 and (potential minor spoilers) the word coming of these is that the film shown doesn't have any clear Cloverfield links; no monster, no Statue of Liberty, no nothing. Of course, there are the barrier of NDAs (although the chatter seems to be directly refuting the marketing) and the strong possibility that an edited-down version, with the focus on the base hostage thriller, was screened to ensure that that element works independent of the inevitable Cloverfield hype (which sounds crazy, but this is Bad Robot), so this might not be the whole truth. So yeah, we can't really take all that much definite from this - it is, at the end of the day, unsubstantiated rumours. However, even if only partially true they reaffirm a lot of what we've presumed, which is useful all the same.
