10 Cloverfield Lane: A Complete Guide To The Viral Marketing
8. Messages To Megan
Typing "Do you want to talk?" leads to a private chat, with various messages to Megan from her Dad, Radioman70. Originally there was only the one, but in the weeks since discovery more have popped up. The obvious assumption is that Howard Stambler is Radioman70 - he built the shelter for her, but wound up using it instead for the movie's characters - but at first there was no explicit confirmation of that. The messages are too long to repeat here, but here's links to stills of thefourcurrentlyreleased. Across the various messages we learn that Megan is living with her mother in Chicago and that her father, who lives in New Oreleans, is a doomsday fantasist; he has a history of building bomb shelters for the end of the world (including one for Y2K) and has built a new, bigger one in fear of an impending attack, as well as a secondary one nearer to Megan. The father has some military experience, which explains his Radioman70 title. As the messages go on, he becomes more convinced his wife is poisoning his daughter's mind against him, leading him to recount an origin for his conspiracy theorising - in his time in the military he was involved in several covert operations that were subject to blanket coverups, making him mistrustful of everything, even claiming a real-world satellite launch is actually a cover for whatever threat he's fearing. The paranoia really ramps up in the latest one, and he mentions intentionally-crashed satellites - something that sneakily links into Cloverfield. Attempting to type a response into the chat leads to a pop-up asking "Is this Megan?" Clicking "Yes" leads to a second question, "What was the secret gift I gave you on your 13th birthday?", which at present remains unsolved. Although that's currently a dead-end, the messages do advance the game - there's a link to a hidden page within the site...
