10 Comic Book Movie Performances So Boring It Actually Hurt
4. Jane Foster - Natalie Portman - Thor
You know that something has gone seriously wrong when Kat Dennings, playing a character who was invented as a sidekick for the film only, is putting in a more interesting performance than Natalie Portman. That's right: Oscar-winning, "I've been acting since I was a child brilliantly," intelligent and sexy Natalie Portman, struggling to hold her own against the girl from 2 Broke Girls (no offence, Kat). How did Natalie Portman even end up playing such a blandy, non-superhero role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe anyway? Why did she settle for Jane Foster? As Thor's not very interesting love interest, then, Portman has phoned Jane in on two occassions, and - despite rumours that she wants out - is bound by contractual obligation to do it again. The problem with Portman as Jane is that you can clearly see her trying to think of ways to make her character - a perfunctory romantic tool if ever there was one - a little bit more interesting. Coming up short (mostly thanks to the underwritten nature of the role), Jane comes across as no better than countless unremarkable rom-com leads played by the likes of Katherine Heigl.
