10 Comic Book Movie Performances So Boring It Actually Hurt
3. Hawkeye - Jeremy Renner - The Avengers
You can't blame Jeremy Renner entirely for the relative disaster that was his Hawkeye, given that the actor himself has lamented in interviews that he wasn't given all that much to work with with regards to his arrow-inclined Avenger. That, coupled with the fact that Hawkeye remained "brainwashed" and under Loki's control for the entire first half of Joss Whedon's The Avengers, meant that Renner's interpretation of the character never really stood a chance when stacked up against other, more developed members of the team, such as Tony Stark and Thor. The problem with Renner's performance, however, is that it's just bland and one-dimensional: yes, this is partly due to the underwritten nature of his character, but also because Renner opts to plays Hawkeye cold and straight, with little personality and no idiosyncratic touches to remember him by. The Hawkeye of the comics is a fun, cocky and confident character - none of this came over in the movie. By the time the credits were rolling on The Avengers, we felt more connected to everyone except our archer, who failed to excite us fans in nearly every way. Meh!
