10 Comic Book Movie Villains Who Were Universally Loved

3. Ian McKellen's Magneto

Ian McKellen has portrayed the mutant Magneto in X-Men, X2, X-Men: The Last Stand and in a mid-credits scene in The Wolverine and he's done a fantastic job so far. He is set to reprise the role in this year's X-Men: Days of Future Past, where he will share the responsibility with Michael Fassbender. McKellen's Magneto conveys a real air of authority and influence, leading the Brotherhood of Mutants who include the likes of Mystique, Toad, Sabretooth and Juggernaut (who isn't a mutant in the comics, incidentally) over the course of the first X-Men trilogy. Although this version does not possess the same level of power and intricacy as comic book Magneto or the forcefields that he can usually erect, McKellen plays a Magneto who still has sufficient power to lift the Golden Gate Bridge using his control over metal. It is an extremely well-received depiction and by the end of this year he could find himself even higher on this list.
