The biggest critique that comes from superhero movies usually comes down to their lack of substance.

As Martin Scorsese has gone on about on various occasions, most skeptics have tended to single out the more artificial side of the genre, being much more about the action than the story at hand. If there were any movie that would shut those critics up though, The Dark Knight is it.

Written very much as a dissection of the criminal mindset, this sequel to Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins refines every single aspect of the Caped Crusader.

The Dark Knight is not so much a superhero movie as much as it is a captivating crime drama, and while some people may question if superhero movies are worthy of discussion outside of the 'amusement park' feeling, this is how you really take the audience on a journey without having to compromise that heroic vision.
