With the MCU looming large over the film industry and pretty much everyone and their mother making extended universes, the influx of comic book films has left some film fans feeling a little bloated.
No matter how much you might like to sell a unique idea of your own to a studio, it's not really going to matter when it doesn't sell as well as the Marvel and DC counterparts. It seemed like Todd Phillips knew that though and flipped everything on its head with Joker.
Though most of this story is written around the character we know to be Batman's nemesis, this is a raw analysis of one man's descent into madness that just so happens to be connected to comic books. Aside from having a guy with the same nickname as a Batman villain, this really is the tale of Arthur Fleck as he loses every ounce of his sanity and morality after experiencing one bad day too many.
Compared to the other flashy comic book films, nothing really feels glamorous about this film either, instead having Gotham City immersing you in this sense of dread and slight panic at every turn.
While many comic book films relish in their source material, this is a case study as to just how much you can do with a comic book film if you only use the bare essentials.
