10 Comic Book Movies That Aren't Based On Comic Books
5. Super
Troma alumnus James Gunn wrote and directed the darkest entry on our rundown, a journey into vigilante territory where the laws of the comic book were put into deadly action by fevered minds. Rainn Wilson played a burger-flipping functionary who dreamed of donning red lycra and meting out a beating to the city's great and not-so-good. Assisting him was the over-eager Ellen Page as a sexier, more violent version of Burt Ward's Robin. Together they became The Crimson Bolt and Boltie. The 2010 movie was funny throughout, with the catchphrase of "Shut Up, Crime!" proving particularly memorable. It capitalized on Wilson's haunted goofiness and Page's winning cynicism as we followed the pair into a true nightmare scenario. As superhero sagas go it was definitely in the realm of Watchmen rather than Homer Simpson's Pieman. It also gave unexpected rise to an offbeat, cash-guzzling phenomenon when Gunn was selected to helm Guardians Of The Galaxy on the strength of Super. Giving fans a premium dollop of acid-tongued escapism, he's currently setting Vol.2 in motion, to rock out in cinemas 2017.
