10 Completely Original Movies To Look Out For In 2019

Mads Mikkelsen Arctic
Bleecker Street

Release Date: 1 February 2019

Another one that's rocked the festival circuit in 2018, the Mads Mikkelsen-starring Arctic holds an even higher Rotten Tomatoes score than Destroyer, sitting at 92%.

The aptly-titled movie will follow Mikkelsen's character after he becomes stranded in the Arctic, learning to survive in this harsh, bitterly cold environment. But when a helicopter crashes midway through a rescue attempt, Mikkelsen decides to carry the injured pilot to a nearby outpost and save them both.

Arctic looks like a combination of The Grey and 127 Hours, with Mikkelsen playing a gruff Liam Neeson-type who has to stretch his will to survive to the absolute limit. The actor is no stranger to delivering compelling, quietly fierce performances (Casino Royale, The Hunt, Hannibal), and assuming he's on top form here, Arctic might just be for Mikkelsen what The Revenant was for DiCaprio, in terms of how far he goes to accurately portray his character's struggles.

Either way, it looks gruelling as hell, and watching someone adapt their day-to-day life to a frozen wasteland should make for a gripping and unrelenting viewing experience.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for over ten years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. In 2022, he took charge of WhoCulture and has grown it into the biggest Doctor Who channel on YouTube, and one of the biggest Doctor Who communities on the web full-stop. He has been writing and video editing since his early teens, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers, off the back of a burning obsession with the Matt Smith era of the show. Like many his age, he first got into Doctor Who with the 2005 revival, but has since gone back and fallen in love with the classic years too. If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order, or to give you a random factoid about the making of Gridlock, Danny is the person to ask!
