Captive State actually made our list of original films last year, but suffered a delay that saw it jump from August 2018 to April 2019. Because we've been talking about it for so long, the hype has diminished a little, but its brilliant, subversive concept has kept it lingering in the back of the mind, despite the extra months we've had to wait.

Directed by Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes' Rupert Wyatt, Captive State takes place in a world where aliens act as our government leaders. Crime and unemployment are at all-time lows and this occupation definitely has benefits, but as you'd expect, things cannot run smoothly for long: the movie will explore both the compliance and the dissidence that this situation sparks in the population.

A hard-edged sci-fi about an extra-terrestrial legislature is an idea that's dripping with promise, especially with the talents of director Wyatt and leading man John Goodman added into the mix. The teaser trailer promises a seamless blend of drama and sci-fi, with neither element being over or under-cooked, indicating that Wyatt has a solid lock on the film's tone and direction, and knows how to deliver on the potential at hand.

Well, we hope he does anyway.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
