7. Killers Not Killing The Lead Character
Dimension FilmsWhen a horror villain is on the rampage, every no-named character and/or extra dies almost immediately in a hack and slash frenzy - see, for example, Jason Voorhees' rampage through the outdoor rave in Freddy Vs Jason or Michael Myers' massacre of Haddonfield Memorial Hospital staff in Halloween II. And yet, when they come face to face with the lead characters, they suddenly want to have a chat or just stop and stare. For example, take the above picture - if that had been any other character coming face to face with Michael Myers, his fist would have gone through the door and, likewise, through their skull. Because of the fact that it's Laurie Strode - the lead character and the one Michael WANTS TO KILL MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE (go figure) - he just stands there staring at her. The same can be said of a number of horror villains, including the aforementioned Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees. It can traverse genres too. Look at the first Predator movie - a science fiction offering. The Predator didn't give any of Dutch's team a chance when it came to killing them, but when it got down to facing Arnold Schwarzenegger's character one on one, instead of just snapping his neck when it first got hold of him, it wanted a fair fight, in which it dilly-dallied around so much that he got the chance to put a plan into action that defeated it.
