10 Convoluted Movies That Ruined Great Ideas

8. Sucker Punch

Sucker Punch One of the most head-smackingly convoluted works in recent cinematic history, Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch is a decent enough idea for a movie - a woman creating a fantasy life to escape the horrors of her real life - though one executed with zero panache (beyond the expected stylistic pleasures) by the director. The plot revolves around 20-year-old Babydoll (Emily Browning) who is being lobotomised on the order of her evil stepfather. Just as the lobotomy occurs, Babydoll incredulously and without much explanation slips into a fantasy world which serves as an allegory of her current predicament; she wishes to "escape", and is advised by fictional figures that she must procure a number of trinkets to facilitate this. It's all seemingly for nothing, though, given that Babydoll is stuck on a table being operated on, and so our emotional investment in her imaginary comrades is absolute nil. Though Babydoll's stepfather is revealed for the monster he is at the end of the movie, there's not really a logic to the fantastical events of the movie, and at the end of the day, it just seemed like an excuse to hurl a wealth of cool visuals at the screen.
