4. Dr Josef Heiter - The Human Centipede: First Sequence (2009)

Dr Josef Heiter is not GP material. He is not any kind of doctor material. In his case MD stands for Medical Deviate (thank you Dr Butcher) and he has a perverted mission to fulfil. He kidnaps two American female tourists and a male Japanese tourist. He staples the three together - ass to mouth - to create a 'human centipede' that functions as a bizarre new animal which has a single digestive tract. He tries to train his 'pet', the Japanese man is at the front and Heiter racially abuses him and hits him with a stick. One of the girls is dying of blood poisoning. When the police come sniffing around, Heiter drugs them with the possible intention of adding them onto his pet but thankfully, Heiter's plans go awry and his wicked mission is foiled. Heiter is a retired surgeon who apparently specialised in the separation of conjoined twins but in his retirement, he is more interested in joining people together. Apparently actor Dieter Laser played a huge part in the development of the character of Josef Heiter. The character was deliberately made German - inspired by Nazi Concentration Camp medical experiments - Six has stated that the film is a reflection on fascism. And in an interview, Laser went so far as to call the film 'a grotesque reflection on the Nazi psyche'. We must remember the terrible time Holland had as a Nazi occupied nation - Dr Josef Heiter sums up all that was perverted, corrupt, ruthless and depraved about the Nazis in the Netherlands. He is a true monster, one of thousands that Nazi Germany spawned. Pasolini's Salo was also a huge influence on the film and it also happens to be a meditation on fascism.
