On a first watch, the big reveal of Haute Tension, aka Switchblade Romance, is a shocking one that has you sat in startled disbelief at what initially hits home as a great final act twist for Alexandre Aja's 2003 picture.

Then, once that buzz simmers down and you start to piece together the events leading to that reveal, you start to realise that the ending of the movie makes zero sense.

For those who have yet to check out Switchblade Romance, the film centres on friends Marie and Alex as they find themselves being hunted down by a deranged madman whose acts of depravity range from brutal murder to receiving oral sex from a decapitated head. Nice guy, right?

As for the film's twist ending, it's revealed that there was no deranged madman. Instead, the killer of the movie was really Marie, who has fabricated the idea of a murderous creep as a way to mask her own violent actions.

Once you take a second to think about what you've just spent 90 minutes watching, the penny drops that it would have been impossible in a time and plausibility respect for Marie to have been the one carrying out the shocking acts depicted across the movie - which in turn tarnishes the frenetic, frantic story that you've just seen play out in front of you.
