10 Crazy Sacrifices Actors Made For A Role (That Totally Backfired)

9. Christian Bale Did A Deep Voice For No Reason - The Dark Knight Trilogy

When auditioning for the role, it was Bale's idea to alter his voice between the parts of Bruce Wayne and his alter ego, adding a deeper, gruffer, more gravelly tone for Batman. This was a completely different tack to previous actors in the role such as Michael Keaton and Adam West, leading Bale to believe he'd be rejected. Of course, it didn't turn out that way. Bale persevered with the voice during and outside of takes, ensuring he was immersed in character at all times. Ultimately this resulted in him completely losing his voice for large parts of filming. What's really galling about this movie sacrifice is how unnecessary it was, since Bale's voice was changed digitally in editing anyway. Obviously his voice-work laid the groundwork, but he could perhaps have gone a little easier on his larynx, since it was going to be changed anyway.
