10 Critically-Reviled Comic Book Movies (That Weren't Actually That Bad)
4. Venom
Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer Score: 29%
Critics Consensus: "Venom's first standalone movie turns out to be like the comics character in all the wrong ways - chaotic, noisy, and in desperate need of a stronger attachment to Spider-Man."
Not to be dramatic, but it seemed like the world was destined to be against Venom since it first became a possibility. You can chalk that up to the fact that the film wasn't an MCU property or just the lack of faith that people had in Sony considering they weren't exactly sure what they wanted to do with all of their Marvel characters; whatever the reason, there wasn't overwhelming excitement about Venom - even with Tom Hardy in the lead role.
It may have predictably opened to negative reviews, but it also ended up becoming one of the most unpredictable movies of 2018, exceeding expectations at the box office and receiving quite the positive response from fans.
Of all the films on this list, Venom may be the most enjoyable. It's certainly flawed - and, in a way, it feels like it belongs more in the early '00s selection of superhero features - but it's ridiculously entertaining, visually impressive and hella funny.
Still not sure what the critics were watching, to be honest...
