10 Deaths That RUINED Movies

8. Vanessa - Deadpool 2 (2018)

"Fridging" is a term coined by comic writer Gail Simone, and it refers to the narrative technique of killing off the female lead in a story to progress the development of the story's typically male counterpart.

This practise was used in the opening act of Deadpool 2, where Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) is broken up by the sudden and needless murder of his girlfriend Vanessa (Morena Baccarin). Vanessa's death then acts as a catalyst for the unkillable hero to accept his role as a member of the X-Men.

Despite the film's hilarious meta humour and clever subversions of pop culture tropes, killing Vanessa off so unnecessarily when she'd played such a big role in the original just felt cheap and unwarranted.

Granted, Vanessa is brought back via time travel in the film's closing credits, but it's hard watching the film knowing the writers used such a tacky and borderline sexist ploy to keep the story moving in the first place.
