10 Deleted Scenes That Explain Confusing Star Trek Moments

9. Star Trek: Discovery - Welcome To Section 31

STAR TREK NERO

The Mystery:

What were those black badges in "Context is For Kings" and how did Georgiou end up in Section 31 after she slunk away at the end of Star Trek: Discovery Season One?

The Deleted Scene:

This was shot as part of Star Trek: Discovery's first season finale "Will You Hold My Hand?" and actually released as a "bonus scene" online a month after the episode aired.

Set some time after the events of that episode, Mirror Universe Georgiou is running a cabaret on Qo'noS where she's approached by Alan Van Sprang's Leland to join Starfleet's secret police, Section 31. Disguised as a Trill, Leland (who would go on to be a recurring character in season two) offers Georgiou a black badge and welcomes her to Section 31.

These badges first appeared on Discovery at the beginning of the first season in "Context is For Kings" and even commented upon, but their significance was never explained. This deleted bonus scene finally provides fans that answer as well as clear motivation for why Georgiou joined up with Section 31. As Leland says, Georgiou can either keep her day job selling lap dances or help shape galactic affairs – an irresistible offer for the former Emperor of the Terran Empire.

By the third episode of Discovery's second season, Georgiou is already deep in Section 31, playing spy with Leland. This deleted bonus scene puts that into context and would've been a useful inclusion in the first season proper.
