10 Depressing Movie Endings That Will Completely Ruin Your Day

7. Superman Returns (2006) - Dir. Bryan Singer

superman returns son The much maligned interquel that serves as the true sequel to Superman II instead of the incredibly disappointing III and IV The Quest For Peace that we actually got. Bryan Singer realized that the only way to save the Superman franchise was to go back and make a follow up to the two Richard Donner originals (Yes, I count the Richard Donner Cut as the canon version of the film) The film has it's strengths and weaknesses, I believed that a man could fly all over again but hated Emo/stalker Superman, but it's the ending that completely undoes the character of Superman, when he makes a choice so out of line with his character that it kind of ruins the idea of him as being the ultimate good guy. Superman at the beginning of the film arrives back on earth after a five year absence to look for traces of his own home planet. Before leaving he has somehow managed to father a child with Lois Lane who has grown to become Super, just like his old man. After defeating Lex Luthor, Superman decides to leave earth behind, but pays a visit to his son where he recites the words his father Jor El said to him. And then abandons him. The great American Hero leaves his son alone with all of his Super powers to be raised alongside people who won't understand him and may even fear him. Rather than protect and look after his son, Kal-El just flies off into the sun. Not exactly the world's greatest father.
