10 Directors Who Drove Their Movie Stars To The Edge

7. David O. Russell And Lily Tomlin - I Heart Huckabees

David O. Russell's temper and sometimes less-than-professional working practices have drawn fire from the entertainment media in recent years, often finding contemporary critics unable to leave their feelings for the director at the door when they go to see his films. But his brash and fiery temperament is nothing new.

Although Russell had a fistfight with George Clooney on the set of his third film, Three Kings, it was on his fourth film I Heart Huckabees -- a curiously philosophical but unfortunately disjointed mid-2000s effort -- that the director really pushed one of his stars over the edge.

The film's production was as chaotic and all-over-the-place as the final product, and as a result Lily Tomlin famously let rip on the notoriously demanding director on set. Russell had been driving her harder and harder, pushing Tomlin to the edge and she snapped, lashing out at him and receiving the same treatment in kind. Although part of the meltdown was captured on video, it didn't receive the notoriety it enjoys today until years later, when further accusations of bad behaviour on the director's part had pundits reconsidering his entire career.
