10 Directors Who Should Helm The X-Men Reboot

1. Matthew Vaughn

Iconic, that perhaps the best filmmaker to reboot the X-Men is the man who already has rebooted the X-Men, Matthew Vaughn. Vaughn famously took over the X-Men series after the first trilogy ended with The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine bombed with fans.

He was tasked to do a soft-reboot in the form of a prequel and despite the rushed production schedule and FOX's lack of interest in the reboot - the lacklustre marketing campaign was a testament to that - Vaughn made what is debatably the best X-Men film: it's certainly in the top three.

The body of Vaughn's filmography has been comic book adaptations - it includes Kick-Ass, Kingsman: The Secret Service and of course X-Men: First Class. This has made him into a fan favourite because of his respect for the source material and has a sweet spot which has delivered films that are colourful and fun, while also have moments of emotional sincerity and darkness.

First Class was in keeping with this style, having the comic book look visuals with is colour pallet, editing, costumes and set design whilst also having a dark revenge storyline involving Magneto hunting the Nazi scientists who experimented on him.

Fans want to see more of this approach for the X-Men films and Vaughn would be a wise choice whether the reboot is soft or hard. He is one of FOX's premier directors, having already directed First Class and Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kingsman: The Golden Circle is coming out next year. If it's a hard reboot Vaughn would have a clean slate to craft the X-Men into his image.

Vaughn could do what Martin Campbell did the Bond series: save a series twice.
