10 Disturbing Life Lessons Disney Movies Teaches You
7. Nothing Changes Without Magic Or An Interesting Theory On Why Our Generation Is So Freaking Depressed
How many times in Disney films is the protagonist's fate changed by absolutely nothing they accomplished? Cinderella is the most prime example, scrubbing away, hoping that someday her dreams will come true, but doing nothing in the meantime to see them happen. It's not the first time. Aladdin would be no one without the Genie pushing him to succeed, Mulan has an Eddie Murphy Dragon, Ariel makes a deal with Ursula (Satan) for legs, and Arthur needs Merlin. Again and again the protagonist's world is somehow magically altered to get them into the story and change their lives for the better. That's fine, except the real world doesn't work that way. People work hard almost their entire lives to find at the end their success could be measured by how hard they worked. Just ask our grandparents, who were born often to penniless families, worked their way up in the business world without educations, and only took a break to fight in wars. They didn't have a Fairy God-anything watching out for them and neither do we. Still many of us hope while we pine away at the measly jobs allotted us hoping one day life will change. Doesn't really help either to have the knowledge that there is a rather good sized portion of our generation that lives off what their parents accomplished and does nothing at all. In the end there is no magical force waiting to find you in the not so distant future and change your destiny so you can live happily ever after (see #1).
