10 Disturbing Life Lessons Disney Movies Teaches You
3. Every Girl Must Be A Princess (Image Crisis for Girls)
Now for the more obviously troubling trend set by Disney that girls are only worth their impossibly slim waist lines, great hair, and perfectly proportioned features. Basically the only thing a girl can ever hope to offer society is her looks. The devastating effect Disney's image of women as presented to young impressionable girls is two fold. The first is that it sets a Barbie standard they begin comparing beauty to at a young age. It starts girls thinking that if they don't grow up to be as beautifully perfect as these girls are then they'll never be a princess who lives happily ever after and meets the man they want to spend their lives with. The other problem is that most of these princesses have nothing to offer except their looks. These are not clear examples of strong female protagonists. Aurora from Sleeping Beauty sleeps the entire time until Prince Phillip wakes her up with a kiss and Snow White is not much better. Jasmine uses her looks to distract Jafar, but in the end is really just Aladdin's "prize to be won." Belle saves her man because she is beautiful. If she had been ugly Beast would have remained a beast and besides he does all the fighting towards the end anyways. Ariel is the worst of them all. She has so much to say that she sells her voice for a man who falls in love with her because of her looks. Once Prince Eric saves the day Ariel regains her voice, but now doesn't have anything to say. In Hercules, the impossibly thin Megaera constantly refers to herself as the damsel in distress. Even the stand on their own, smart princess characters, with the exception of Mulan, are primarily prized only for their looks. Which leads us to an even bigger problem. Sure life is hard for girls who don't feel that they can live up to the princess image, but what about the girls that do? Well, they usually become insufferable rich and shallow trophy wives who know that their looks really are the only thing they have to offer to the world. Nice to look at, sad, miserable individuals.
