10 Django Unchained Lessons Tarantino Must Learn For New Western

2. Stronger Female Characters, Please

Django Unchained Jamie Foxx Kerry Washington Rest assured, I'm not suggesting that QT doesn't write strong female characters or anything, because he totally does, and has been doing so for a long time (has there been a bigger cinematic badass in last decade or so worthy of The Bride?). Still, Django Unchained featured just one major female character in Kerry Washington's beautiful Broomhilda, and we didn't really get a sense of who she was or what her deal was at all, did we? She mostly served as an object for Django to find, and all but one of her more interesting scenes were cut out in the final version. The reason there aren't really any strong female characters in Django Unchained? Well, think about the setting, I suppose: the wild west (or south, even) wasn't exactly a great place to be for a woman to be - then again, neither was Nazi-occupied France, and Tarantino gave us the likes of Shoshanna Dreyfuss when we went there. So whereas QT's first western sort of skimps out on having any truly memorable female characters, there's no reason he couldn't assure something of that sort in this follow-up. I mean, Calamity Jane existed, didn't she?
