10 Documentaries More Terrifying Than Most Horror Films
9. Out Of Thin Air (2017)
Revolving around a case in 1974 in
which two men mysteriously vanished in Iceland, Out Of Thin Air explains how police
were initially at a loss when it came to the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the case. They had no clues to go on and were under extreme
pressure from the media to act fast.
A breakthrough finally came when a suspect in another case, Erla Bolladottir, admitted to having a nightmare about one of the missing the night they vanished. Investigators were convinced this was a repressed memory of a murder. Bolladottir, alongside five others, were convicted of crime they didn’t commit.
With its various twists and turns, Out Of Thin Air is as enthralling as crime documentaries get. However, it doesn't take long for this film to take a sinister turn.
Those convicted weren't murderers. They were victims of the harrowing ordeal the authorities subjected them to. They were interviewed for hundreds of hours at a time and manipulated to believing that they were killers. And that thought is more frightening than any serial killer.
We're supposed to trust the police to carry out justice fairly. After seeing this film, though, trusting anyone again will be difficult.
