10 Dumb Movie Trailers That Ruined The Film's Ending
3. The Impossible (2012)
The miraculous true story of a family on Christmas vacation in idyllic Khao Lak, Thailand when the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami struck, The Impossible follows their desperate search for each other in the aftermath of the disaster. Naomi Watts received an Oscar nod for her turn as mother Maria, working brilliantly with a pre-Spider-Man Tom Holland.
Despite being based on a Spanish family, written by Spaniard Sergio G. Sanchez and directed by compatriot Juan Antonio Bayona, the film was given an English-speaking cast, with the name Belón being changed to Bennett.
That was far from the most baffling thing about The Impossible, however, with the powers that be making the head-scratching decision to answer the film's biggest question in their advertising campaign - yes, they all survive, and yes, they all find each other.
Although it was a sensational story, the filmmakers had the benefit of US audiences being relatively unfamiliar with it, yet they decided to reveal the unbelievable climax in both the movie posters and the trailers.
The Impossible is so well directed and powerfully acted that it remains an enjoyable experience, though it would have surely packed more punch had audiences went into it not knowing that the Bennett's would be reunited against all odds.
