6. Jar Jar Calls For Palpatine To Be Granted Emergency Powers - Attack Of The Clones (2002)
By a healthy bit of political wangling and good old fashioned bureaucratic incompetence, Jar Jar Binks was somehow appointed as a junior delegate for Naboo in the Galactic Senate (though, in Legends canon, it was Palpatine himself who made sure this happened - and with good reason).
In the absence of Senator Padmé Amidala, who has been captured by the Separatists on Geonosis, Jar Jar led the call for the Senate to grant emergency powers to Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, allowing him to adopt a convenient and timely Kamino-made clone army as the new Army of the Republic.
With these powers, Palpatine is now well placed to take control of the galaxy piece by piece, backed by the might of an army that, ultimately, even the Jedi can't stop. Thus, Jar Jar's actions pave the way for Palpatine to take absolute control at the head of the first Galactic Empire, and the many horrors that are to come.
His deeds have not been without punishment, as Jar Jar once again becomes an outcast from Naboo society, and can be found performing as a clown on the streets of Theed during the era of the New Republic. But one can't help but feel this fate is a little unjust - Jar Jar is a being known for his clumsiness and lack of forward thinking, so to elevate him to political office is a bit like putting a reality TV star in charge of one of the biggest global powers...
