10 Dumbest Miscastings In Recent Movies

7. Where To Begin? - Emilia Perez

The audacious yet ultimately unsuccessful Emilia Perez, which was very much the villain of the 2025 award season, is a unique genre-blender. It's a musical about a Mexican cartel boss (Karla Sofia Gascon) who fakes their death so that they can undergo a sex-change operation and start living life as a woman, but soon finds that she is unable to escape her past.

This is a movie set in Mexico and about Mexican characters, so you'd reasonably assume that they'd actually, you know, cast Mexican actors. Or at the very least, actors who could speak Spanish properly and with convincing Mexican accents.

Instead, Emilia Perez only features one Mexican actor in a noteworthy role, and the rest of the cast were criticized for their inauthentic accents and line deliveries, and deservedly so. Selena Gomez, in particular, came under heavy criticism, and even Zoe Saldana, who was by far the best performer in the film (although her winning the Oscar over Felicity Jones and Ariana Grande was ridiculous), struggled a bit in this regard.

Had Emilia Perez bothered to cast people who were closer to the culture it was trying to depict, these problems and all the controversies the film faced throughout awards season could've easily been avoided.
