10 Dystopian Movie Futures You Really Wouldn't Want To Live In
3. 1984
The granddaddy of all dystopian societies that we'd sooner guzzle Draino than inhabit. There's nothing that's not creepy about the world of 1984. The thought police are following people around, just waiting for them to step out of line so they can be arrested. Big Brother is watching you all the time -- even your most private, intimate moments aren't safe. And God forbid you end up at the Ministry of Love. Because they don't just want to punish or execute you there, they want to torture you until there's nothing left but their ideology. They don't want to punish you for saying 2+2=4, or scare you into saying 2+2=5 just so that you don't get in trouble. They want you to genuinely believe with all your heart that 2+2 equals whatever they say it does. And that's what makes it so terrifying. Going to jail isn't losing everything, not really. Having your mind twisted and bent against your will so that you truly love your oppressors is losing everything. So to Mr George Orwell, who came up with this hellish nightmare, we say good day to you sir, but we want nothing to do with your Oceania.
