10 Epic Fantasy Movies You Probably Haven't Seen

5. The Fountain

Sometimes epic fantasy doesn't come from whimsical worlds but through epic storytelling. The Fountain is another highly divisive flick from Darren Aronofsky, encompassing a tale spanning a thousand years.

Hugh Jackman plays a Spanish conquistador, a veterinary scientist, and a space-travelling monk all on an obsessive quest to conquer death itself. It's a visual and audial masterpiece, with a killer soundtrack and sensational aesthetics that will delight any fantasy buff. Enchanted flowers, breathing trees, and an artistic portrayal dying star all concoct into an explosive golden feast for the eyes.

The narrative takes its time to unfurl, and, despite some inconsistencies, the two leads of Jackman and Rachel Weisz keep The Fountain on its course on "the road of awe." While the moral behind the three stories becomes more and more apparent and ham-handed as the film progresses, it doesn't lessen The Fountain's stunning and arguably inevitable conclusion.

The Fountain didn't quite hit gold at the box office, yet its cult following is definitely deserved for its beautifully majestic cinematic moments.
