10 Essential Movies You Need To Tick Off Your Bucket List

2. Mulholland Drive

Universal

One of David Lynch’s trickier films and yet simultaneously among the most enjoyable, Mulholland Drive isn’t a movie that demands you figure out what every last thing means. Going into it as though it’s a riddle to be solved is beyond the point: it’s an experience as much as it is a narrative, and one well worth taking.

Naomi Watts and Laura Elena Harding star in dual roles as actresses and mirror versions of themselves. There’s a love story, an investigation into the dark side of Hollywood, a whole lot of symbolism concealed within dreams.

There’s little sense trying to describe Mulholland Drive other than to say it’s David Lynch at his most Lynchian. Initially intended as a TV pilot, when Lynch’s pitch was rejected by networks he took what he had and expanded it into a film equal parts baffling and captivating.

With superb performances from the entire cast, particularly Watts, and an intensely unsettling vibe the likes of which only Lynch can conjure, this is a film few could have made. Love it or hate it, it’ll certainly make you feel something.
