10 Exact Moments Actors Stopped Trying
1. Bad Casting, Worse Accent - Meg Ryan
Meg Ryan was one of the most bankable actresses of the 1990s, starring in a string of acclaimed and successful movies such as Sleepless in Seattle, When a Man Loves a Woman, Courage Under Fire, City of Angels, and You've Got Mail.
But by the year 2000, Ryan slammed hard into a critical and commercial brick wall.
Though she attempted to reinvent her image with unexpected performances in lurid thriller In the Cut and sports biopic Against the Ropes, the former received a brutal "F" CinemaScore, and the latter was a colossal box office bomb.
Though on paper the prospect of Ryan playing against-type as legendary boxing manager Jackie Kallen was an intriguing hook, neither the film's script nor Ryan's performance were much engaging or believable, and it was distressingly clear she'd been miscast in a role she was absolutely unqualified to play.
Ryan's laughable attempt at a Detroit accent was especially singled out by critics, making it clear she hadn't really done her homework.
Sadly she hasn't appeared in a single well-received film in the 16 years since, having starred in just a single movie in the last decade.
