10 Most Exciting Films Premiering At Toronto Film Festival 2014
3. My Old Lady
What It's About: A down-on-his luck Manhattanite gets the ultimate in big breaks: a no-strings-attached apartment in Paris from his late father, a man he hadn't seen or heard from in a long time. Well, we say no-strings-attached, but some people would probably consider a random elderly woman and her daughter living in the apartment already to be pretty stringy. When he shows up there, he finds Maggie Smith squatting, as it were, with her very protective daughter played by Kristin Scott Thomas. Why You Should Be Excited: Look, we're not snobs about acting. You don't have to go to a fancy acting school to put in really amazing performances, and sometimes well-trained actors are too stuck in their own heads to be spontaneous in a role. That said, sometimes it's nice to have a film filled with classically trained actors who you know are going to knock it out of the park. And in this film, you've got a main trio of actors whose abilities are absolutely beyond reproach: Kevin Kline, Maggie Smith, and Kristin Scott Thomas. With that level of talent, you don't even have to question whether or not the film is going to be good. It will be. Maggie Smith will stand for nothing less.
