I'm sure if we all had access to the Internet in 1983, the casting of Richard Pryor in Superman III would have sent angry shockwaves around the web in much the same way that all this Ben Affleck and Jesse Eisenberg nonsense has recently. I won't for a second try and discredit Pryor's obvious comic talents, and I can see why it made sense to cast him in a comic relief role if they were so determined to give him a part, but did they really need to a) cast him, totally unbelievably, as a computer hacker and b) did he need such a big part in the movie? This is Pryor at his most obnoxiously annoying, and it doesn't help that his role in the movie is totally ridiculous, being blackmailed by his boss Ross Webster (aka Lex Luthor But We Couldn't Afford Gene Hackman) to help monopolise the world's supply of...coffee crops. What's more annoying is that Gus was originally going to be a cover for Superman's iconic villain Brainiac, but Warner Bros. executives nixed the idea. Not that I could've stomached Pryor playing Brainiac either, but it couldn't have been worse than the loud nerd we got, could it? Are there any major annoyances in comic book movies I missed? Let me know in the comments!
