10 Failed Horror Movies Without A Single Scary Moment

10. The Happening (2008)

The Happening In retrospect, it's clear to see that The Happening was marketed as being far more of a horror movie than it actually was: it's not really a horror movie as much as it's an eco-thriller, and not a very good one at that. The only really horror to be associated with this, in fact, is on behalf of its director, M. Night Shyamalan, who presumably looks back at this movie as "the one where I pushed it too far, and everybody decided not to like me anymore." As with a couple of other movies on this list, though, The Happening fails at horror so badly that it ends up being hilarious. And let's face it: the plot (which might have been workable had it been written in a book by Stephen King or something) was super naff, in the sense that the big reveal as "plants did it." The most embarrassing thing - aside from Mark Wahlberg trying to convince us that he's a school teacher - is that Shyamalan tries to scare us with shots of the wind blowing against loud orchestral cues. That's it. Shots of trees and plants blowing is the most horror you ever get with this one. It doesn't work, of course, because the wind is invisible, and that's really, really dumb.
